Touring the UK this spring is SuperEverything* by leading audio-visual artists The Light Surgeons. This is a cross disciplinary, live cinema performance, commissioned by the British Council. It has has been created in collaboration with some of Malaysia’s most high profile artists and musicians, who will be joined by on the tour members of the acclaimed Heritage Orchestra. Filmed across the breadth of Malaysia, this ambitious live audio-visual performance weaves together documentary narratives to create a kaleidoscopic portrait of Malaysia, one of South East Asia’s most culturally diverse countries. The resulting immersive experience combines traditional South East Asian instruments, western classical compositions, field recordings and electronic synthesis, all of which are manipulated live and complemented by stunning layered documentary footage and motion graphics. Juxtaposing tradition with modernity, SuperEverything* seeks to discover how our sense of identity is formed through our collective participation in everyday rituals. It is a journey through Malaysia’s past, to understand its present and to question its future as it approaches its most pivotal general elections in 2013.
